Overview of the UK Commonwealth Fellowship Programme
From the 2026/27 cycle, the CSC has introduced a new Commonwealth Fellowship Programme that includes two distinct strands: the established Professional Fellowships and a new Academic Fellowships strand. Both are open to candidates from all Commonwealth countries.
Commonwealth Professional Fellowships are designed for mid-career professionals from eligible Commonwealth countries (excluding the UK). Fellows undertake a structured programme of professional development at a UK host organisation working in their sector.
Commonwealth Academic Fellowships are intended for academic staff who hold a PhD and are employed at a university in an eligible Commonwealth country (excluding the UK). These fellowships support academic skills updating, knowledge exchange, and networking, with the aim of establishing longer-term collaboration with a UK university.
The overall purpose of both strands is to enable citizens of Commonwealth countries to spend a period in the UK undertaking professional or academic development that will generate developmental impact upon their return home.
Intended Beneficiaries of UK Commonwealth Fellowship
- Professional Fellows should be mid-career professionals with at least five years of relevant experience working in organisations in an eligible Commonwealth country.
- Academic Fellows must hold a PhD and be currently employed by a university in an eligible Commonwealth country (other than the UK).
The CSC provisionally plans to offer around 40 fellowships in total:
- Approximately 10 fellowships for citizens of Commonwealth countries not eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA).
- Approximately 30 fellowships for citizens of Commonwealth countries that are ODA-eligible.
Development Themes
All fellowships are offered under six CSC development themes:
- Science and technology for development
- Improving population health, health systems and capacity
- Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship
- Strengthening peace, security and governance
- Strengthening resilience and response to crises
- Access, inclusion and opportunity
Duration and Start Dates
- Professional Fellowships must begin between mid-February and mid-March 2027 and last between six weeks and three months.
- Academic Fellowships must begin in January or February 2027 and last exactly three months.
Host Organisation Programmes
A range of UK-based organisations have been selected to host Commonwealth Fellows in 2027. Each organisation runs a bespoke programme. Candidates apply to a specific host programme rather than to a generic fellowship.
Some hosts recruit primarily from their existing networks. Where this is the case, it is clearly indicated. Applicants are advised to contact those hosts directly before applying to avoid disappointment.

Eligibility Requirements for UK Commonwealth Fellowship
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be a citizen of, or have been granted refugee status by, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.
- Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country and not hold indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
- For Professional Fellowships: have at least five years’ full-time (or equivalent part-time) relevant work experience in a profession related to the fellowship programme (voluntary work does not count).
- For Academic Fellowships: hold a PhD and be employed by a university in a Commonwealth country other than the UK.
- Be in employment at the time of application at an organisation they will return to after the fellowship.
- Provide at least two references, one of which must be from their current employer.
- Not have undertaken a Commonwealth Fellowship within the previous five years.
- Be available to start on the prescribed start date of the chosen programme.
Applicants must also meet any additional eligibility criteria set by the individual host organisation.
Strand-Specific Requirements
Professional Fellowships
- Must have at least five years’ full-time (or equivalent part-time) relevant work experience in a profession related to the subject of the fellowship programme by the proposed start date.
- Voluntary work experience does not count towards the five-year minimum.
- Academics may apply, but only for programmes focused on academic management — not for research or courses related to their research subject.
Academic Fellowships
- Must hold a PhD.
- Must be employed by a university in an eligible Commonwealth country other than the UK.
Financial Support
Each fellowship includes:
- Approved return airfare from the Fellow’s home country to the UK.
- Reimbursement of the standard UK visa application fee.
- A monthly stipend of £2,218 (or £2,753 for those based in the London metropolitan area) – rates quoted at 2025/26 levels.
- An arrival allowance of up to £1,247.09 (including provision for warm clothing).
- Additional support for approved short courses, conferences, or visits to other UK organisations (up to £1,000 for programmes of 6 weeks–2 months, or up to £2,000 for programmes of 2–3 months).
- Disability-related support following a needs assessment, where applicable.

Applications must be submitted through the official Commonwealth Fellowship application form.
Applications opened at 09:00 BST on Tuesday 28 July 2026 and close at 16:00 BST on Tuesday 25 August 2026.
The CSC cannot accept applications or supporting documents submitted by any other method.
In the application form, candidates are asked to provide details of their academic and professional background, employment history, a development impact statement (in four parts), personal statement, voluntary and leadership experience, and other supporting information.

Important Notes
- Fellows must return to their home country and previous place of employment at the end of the award.
- Paid employment is not permitted during the fellowship.
- Fellows must reside in the UK for the duration of the award (overseas travel requires prior CSC approval and is granted only in exceptional circumstances).
- All Fellows require a Temporary Work – Government Authorised Exchange (GAE) visa.
