iCare Foundation Secures China Scholarships for Three Ikorodu Students to Pursue Postgraduate Studies

Three students from Ikorodu Federal Constituency in Lagos State have secured Chinese Government international scholarships to pursue postgraduate and professional programmes in China.

The scholarships were facilitated through the Jimi Benson iCare Foundation, following a competitive selection process involving applicants who sought educational support through the constituency office of Babajimi Benson, the member representing Ikorodu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The three beneficiaries are Oluwatobiloba Bello, Temitayo Faseyide and Faith Nwobu. Their selection brings the number of Ikorodu students currently benefiting from the scholarship opportunity to four, with an earlier beneficiary already studying in China.

Three Ikorodu Students Receive Scholarships for Different Programmes in China

The beneficiaries will study different programmes at Chinese universities.

  1. Oluwatobiloba Bello will undertake a PhD in National Development at Peking University, one of China’s leading universities.
  2. Temitayo Faseyide will study Nursing at Jinzhou Medical University, giving her an opportunity to pursue professional healthcare training in China.
  3. Faith Nwobu will undertake a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at North Eastern University, Shenyang.

The range of programmes means the scholarship initiative is supporting students across different areas, including national development, healthcare and business administration.

Scholarship Selection Followed a Competitive Process

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the three students were selected after several applications for educational support were submitted through the Ikorodu Federal Constituency office.

The selection process considered applicants’ academic records and performance at their previous institutions. Applicants also participated in a screening exercise conducted by the foundation’s education team.

This means the beneficiaries were not simply selected through an automatic constituency allocation. Their academic background and performance during the foundation’s assessment formed part of the selection process.

Peking University Will Host One of the Ikorodu Scholars

Bello’s admission to Peking University is one of the notable aspects of the scholarship. She will pursue a doctoral degree in National Development, placing her in an advanced research environment in China.

A PhD programme can provide opportunities to develop specialised research expertise, establish international academic connections and contribute to policy or development research after graduation.

Bello described the opportunity as an important milestone in her academic career and expressed appreciation for the support that made the opportunity possible.

Nursing Scholarship Creates an International Study Opportunity for Faseyide

Faseyide will study Nursing at Jinzhou Medical University. For the beneficiary, the opportunity provides international exposure in the healthcare field while allowing her to pursue advanced academic and professional development outside Nigeria.

She said the scholarship had opened a new chapter in her academic and professional journey and pledged to remain focused throughout the programme.

MBA Scholarship Supports Business and Management Training

Nwobu will pursue an MBA at North Eastern University in Shenyang. An MBA can provide training in areas such as management, finance, entrepreneurship, strategy, organisational leadership and business development.

Now, for a constituency scholarship programme, supporting business education alongside healthcare and doctoral research creates a broader range of skills that beneficiaries can potentially bring back to Nigeria. Nwobu said she regarded the scholarship as an important platform for advancing her academic and professional aspirations.

Fourth Ikorodu Beneficiary Is Already Studying in China

The three newly selected scholars are not the first Ikorodu beneficiaries of the China scholarship opportunity.

Sadiq Jimoh, another beneficiary from the constituency, is already in China pursuing a master’s degree. His participation brings the total number of Ikorodu Federal Constituency students benefiting from the scholarship opportunity to four.

Jimi Benson Urges Scholars to Represent Ikorodu and Nigeria Well

Speaking during a pre-departure engagement with the three scholars, Babajimi Benson congratulated the beneficiaries and urged them to remain focused throughout their programmes.

He told the students that their conduct abroad would reflect not only on themselves but also on Ikorodu and Nigeria. The lawmaker encouraged them to respect Chinese laws and regulations, maintain discipline and make productive use of their time abroad.

He also urged the students to return with knowledge and experience that could contribute to the development of their communities and the country.

The Scholarship Goes Beyond Tuition and Academic Qualifications

Benson said the programme should not be viewed solely as a means of obtaining academic certificates. According to him, studying abroad also gives beneficiaries opportunities to gain international exposure, professional relationships and new perspectives.

This broader approach is particularly relevant for postgraduate scholars because international education can create connections with researchers, professionals, institutions and organisations beyond the student’s home country.

The expectation is that these experiences will eventually translate into contributions to local communities and Nigeria’s wider development.

Foundation Encourages Scholars to Maintain Academic Discipline

Deen Sanwoola, Director-General of the Jimi Benson iCare Foundation, also advised the beneficiaries to approach their studies with seriousness.

He urged them to avoid distractions and remain committed to their academic programmes.

Sanwoola said the students were travelling to China to acquire knowledge and experience that could strengthen their professional and academic capabilities.

He also encouraged them to maintain exemplary conduct throughout their stay and to remember the responsibility associated with representing their constituency and country abroad.

The Programme Demonstrates How Constituency Support Can Fund International Education

The Ikorodu initiative is an example of how educational support can be delivered at the constituency level rather than through a nationwide scholarship programme.

The beneficiaries were selected from Ikorodu Federal Constituency, and the opportunity was facilitated through the constituency’s representative and the Jimi Benson iCare Foundation.

This means students from other parts of Nigeria should not assume that the reported scholarship is a general Chinese Government scholarship currently open to every Nigerian applicant.

The reported opportunity specifically concerns the three selected Ikorodu beneficiaries and the foundation’s educational support initiative.

China Continues to Attract Nigerian Students

China has become an increasingly important destination for international students seeking postgraduate education, particularly in fields such as engineering, technology, medicine, business, sciences and development studies.

Chinese universities also participate in international scholarship programmes and government-to-government educational cooperation.

For Nigerian students, opportunities connected to China can therefore come through different channels, including Chinese Government scholarships, university scholarships, institutional partnerships and special initiatives such as the one reported in Ikorodu.

Students should always check the specific eligibility requirements and application arrangements attached to each programme because not every China scholarship has the same selection process.

What the Scholarship Means for Ikorodu Students

The initiative could have a wider impact beyond the three immediate beneficiaries. Students who receive international education opportunities can return with specialised knowledge that can be applied in local institutions, businesses, healthcare facilities, research organisations and public-sector programmes.

The combination of national development, nursing and business administration also provides skills in areas that are relevant to community and economic development.

The foundation’s decision to support students through international study therefore represents an investment in individual academic advancement as well as potential community development.

The Beneficiaries Have Committed to Academic Excellence

The three scholars expressed appreciation for the opportunity and pledged to take their studies seriously. Bello said she would remain dedicated to her doctoral research, while Faseyide and Nwobu similarly expressed their intention to make productive use of the opportunity.

Their commitments align with the expectations communicated by the foundation and the constituency representative that the scholars should return with knowledge and experience that can benefit their communities.

Important Information for Other Nigerian Scholarship Seekers

The reported China scholarships should not be confused with a general application window for all Nigerian students. The three beneficiaries were selected through a specific educational support process connected to the Ikorodu Federal Constituency.

For students elsewhere in Nigeria who are interested in studying in China, separate opportunities may be available through Chinese Government scholarships, university scholarships and other international education programmes.

Such applicants should rely on official scholarship announcements and university websites for eligibility, application dates, required documents and funding information rather than assuming that the Ikorodu programme is open nationally.

Conclusion

The Jimi Benson iCare Foundation has facilitated Chinese Government international scholarship opportunities for three students from Ikorodu Federal Constituency, enabling them to pursue programmes in National Development, Nursing and Business Administration.

The new beneficiaries—Oluwatobiloba Bello, Temitayo Faseyide and Faith Nwobu—will study at Peking University, Jinzhou Medical University and North Eastern University in Shenyang respectively.

Their selection followed a competitive process that considered academic records and performance in a foundation screening exercise.

With another Ikorodu beneficiary already studying in China, the programme now has four beneficiaries from the constituency.
